The Bills’ front office could be poached again as Terrance Gray is interviewing in Jacksonville.
The Buffalo Bills front office continues to be of interest to other teams hiring general managers, and the Jacksonville Jaguars are planning to add to the mix this week. Bills director of player personnel Terrance Gray will interview for the Jags’ open GM position this week.
Has Terrance Gray interviewed for general manager jobs before?
Gray interviewed with the Tennessee Titans this year, making it to the second round of interviews. He spoke with the Los Angeles Chargers and Las Vegas Raiders last year, while declining a meeting with the New England Patriots.
Terrance Gray’s resume
The Bills hired Gray as director of college scouting in 2017 when Brandon Beane first became general manager. He was promoted to assistant director of player personnel in 2020 and the director of player personnel in 2022.
What is director of player personnel in the NFL?
The director of player personnel oversees both the NFL Draft and pro personnel (think free agents) departments, so it’s really one step below assistant general manager and is the third in the hierarchy.
Who are the Jaguars interviewing for general manager?
The Jaguars also have requested interviews with 49ers director of scouting and football operations Josh Williams, Rams director of scouting strategy James Gladstone, Chargers assistant General Manager Chad Alexander, Bengals senior personnel executive Trey Brown, Bears assistant General Manager Ian Cunningham and Giants assistant G.M. Brandon Brown.
Jacksonville parted ways with (in this case fired) their general manager Trent Baalke after enough head coach candidates all said they didn’t want to work with him. They recently hired Tony Boselli as VP of football operations.
The Bills have lost several members of the front office to promotions
Gray would be the fourth Bills’ front office member to be poached since Beane took over. Buffalo bills assistant general manager Joe Schoen was hired away to be the New York Giants general manager in 2022. In 2021, the Carolina Panthers hired Bills director of player personnel Dan Morgan as their assistant general manager. In 2018, the Houston Texans hired vide president of player personnel Brian Gaine as their general manager, but he returned to the Bills after being fired in Houston. Gaine is currently the assistant general manager for Buffalo. Senior personnel advisor Malik Boyd has received numerous general manager interviews in the past, as well.
The NFL awards compensatory picks for a minority executive hire
As part of the NFL’s expanded Rooney Rule in 2020, teams are rewarded when they develop minority head coaches and top executives (i.e. general managers). Gray is a minority candidate, so if he is hired by the Jaguars, the Bills would receive a third-round selection in both the 2025 and 2026 NFL drafts.
