Catch up with the latest news — including game recaps, takeaways, and analysis — from Buffalo’s uninspired and messy preseason loss to Chicago

The Buffalo Bills made their 2024 NFL preseason debut on a picture-perfect Saturday afternoon at Highmark Stadium. Unfortunately for the Bills and their fans, the team was thoroughly outplayed during a 33-6 drubbing at the hands of the Chicago Bears.

Today’s edition of Buffalo Rumblinks leads off with thoughts and observations from Buffalo’s Week 1 preseason loss to the Bears, including game recaps, takeaways and analysis, including which Bills players improved their stock and which players didn't help their chances at making the roster.

Game recap: Bills held out of end zone, Bears enjoy big second half

Quarterback Josh Allen played the first quarter, completing 2 of 3 passes for 22 yards while adding a seven-yard scamper. On his first series, the Bills went three-and-out, while Allen was removed from the game in favor of Mitch Trubisky on the second possession that ended in a 24-yard field goal by Tyler Bass. Trubisky and third-string quarterback Shane Buechele had difficulty moving the ball against a stout Bears defense, while Buffalo’s defense allowed rookie quarterback Caleb Williams to engineer a pair of field-goal drives en route to a 6-3 halftime lead.

Reactions from Buffalo’s preseason opener

Among the important takeaways from the preseason opener: the Bills looked sluggish on both sides of the ball; the running game failed to get on track; Buffalo’s offensive line was disappointing; the first-string defense was burned for several big-yardage plays; and the Bills still have a lot of work to do.

Plus, reviewing how Josh Allen’s new offensive weapons fared, and see whose stock is on the rise — including WRs Khalil Shakir and Andy Isabella, RBs Frank Gore Jr. and Ray Davis, LB Dorian Williams, edge rusher Javon Solomon, and kicker Tyler Bass — and whose stock is on the decline — QB Shane Buechele, WRs KJ Hamler and Marquez Valdes-Scantling, the red zone offense, the return game, and more.

Josh Allen, Sean McDermott postgame pressers

We hear why Josh Allen isn’t too concerned with how the Bills played in their preseason opening loss, and from head coach Sean McDermott on why the team’s “standard was not out there today.”
