Joe Schoen casually asked Brandon Beane and Dan Morgan if they wanted to make a big trade in the 2024 NFL Draft.

“You guys wanna move up to 6?”

New York Giants general manager Joe Schoen opens the most recent teaser for HBO’s Hard Knocks series standing next to Carolina Panthers GM Dan Morgan and eventually we see Bills GM Brandon Beane on the other side of Morgan. It appears the trio is at the Reese’s Senior Bowl based on the orange lanyards and the fact that they are outside.

With Carolina picking 33 and Buffalo at 28, the packages to move up to 6 would have been absolutely massive and involve multiple high picks. That didn’t stop Schoen, who notes “It doesn’t hurt to ask.”

Morgan countered with, “If I’m going anywhere it’s going back.”

That turned out to be a lie. He traded up to 32 with Beane, who had moved down from 28 in a trade with the Kansas City Chiefs.

Beane said he couldn’t afford a top-10 pick. At pick 28, Buffalo would have needed to include their second-round pick plus next year’s first to even begin the conversation.

That’s when things really get juicy.

“You wanna give us two ones for [Brian] Burns?” asked Morgan. “Or a one and something.”

That deal actually did get done later in the offseason when the Giants sent a second-round pick and a 2025 fifth-round pick for the pass rusher.

Both Morgan and Schoen worked for Beane in the Bills’ front office over the last several years before being hired away to take over their own teams, so these three cutting it up in close proximity is no accident.

Schoen was one of Beane’s first hires, joining the staff as assistant general manager in 2017 shortly after Beane was hired. Morgan joined the following year in 2018 as the number three in the organization.

Schoen has been the Giants GM since 2022. Morgan was hired by the Panthers as assistant general manager in 2021 before being promoted to GM in 2024.
