The veteran corner looks to stick on the 53-man roster this season
The Buffalo Bills have some question marks in the defensive secondary. Namely, those questions involve who the players will be that fill out the roster. There is also some debate as to which players will start, but general consensus is that there are four cornerbacks who are “safe” for the roster this season. Beyond those four, it’s anyone’s guess as to who’ll make the team.
In today’s edition of “91 players in 91 days,” we focus on a player who’s been in the NFL since 2019, but who hasn’t appeared in a regular season game since the 2021 NFL season.
Kyron Brown
- Number: 32
- Position: CB
- Height/Weight: 6’1”, 195 pounds
- Age: 28 (29 on 5/26/2025)
- Experience/Draft: 3; signed with the New York Jets following the 2019 NFL Draft
- College: Akron
- Acquired: Signed with Buffalo on 7/28/2024
Financial situation (per Spotrac): Brown signed a reserve/futures contract this offseason in order to remain with the Bills. It’s a one-year deal worth $994,000 overall. Of that total, just $9,000 is guaranteed. If he’s released, that minuscule amount is what Buffalo will carry in the form of a dead-cap charge for the season. If he makes the 53-man roster, Brown’s cap number will be $994,000.
2023 Recap: Brown signed with the Bills late in July when the team had a need for some extra depth in the defensive backfield. He played in all three preseason games for Buffalo, notching three tackles and a pass breakup in those contests. Brown didn’t make the final roster, but the Bills signed him to their practice squad after he was initially cut from the team. He didn’t appear in a regular season game, remaining on the practice squad for the duration of the season.
Positional outlook: Brown is one of many vying for a spot on the roster. He’s joined by Rasul Douglas, Christian Benford, Kaiir Elam, Ja’Marcus Ingram, Dee Delaney, Te’Cory Couch, and Kent-H Lovely as outside corners. Cam Lewis, Taron Johnson, and Daequan Hardy are also listed at corner for Buffalo, but they play primarily in the slot.
2024 Offseason: Brown is healthy and has participated in all offseason work for the team.
2024 Season outlook: I don’t think that Brown has much of a shot at the roster — but given the uncertainty behind Douglas, Benford, and Elam, anything is possible. It’s likely a free-for-all between Brown, Ingram, Lovely, Couch, and Delaney, with the top dog among that fearsome fivesome earning the fourth corner spot.
Without seeing any preseason action, I assume that Ingram has the inside edge, but I can’t see any one of those players being a shoo-in. Brown will have a chance, although he hasn’t been able to crack an NFL roster since the 2021 season, and that was just a one-game engagement with the Dallas Cowboys. He’ll likely be a practice squad consideration again.
